Jamaica
Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean - behind Cuba and Hispaniola (the two countries of Dominican Republic and Haiti combine to form Hispaniola) with a population of roughly 2.7 million, about one-third of whom live in the Kingston area. The topography ranges from flat ranges to Blue Mountain peak at 7,400' above sea level. Weather is fairly typical for the Caribbean with rainy (June through October) and dry seasons, hot and humid summers and comfortable water temperatures throughout the year.

While Kingston has a bustling airport (KIN), most travelers seem to arrive into Montego Bay (MBJ), which offers better and more convenient access to the rest of Jamaica - including Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay and Negril (most are an hour or more by car from the airport). Kingston is generally to be avoided as crime - including gangs, poverty and the like are far more prevalent here than the rest of the island, though crime is an element everywhere. Recently, in Kingston, there have been major riots between gangs and government police and military forces. It is unclear whether gangs or the government have the upper hand, here. Traditional Caribbean pursuits abound here with a better than average collection of golf courses, resorts, restaurants and the like. There are many festivals, musical events and Carnivale activities to be had year-round. Be prepared to experience the wide disparity in socio-economic status between resort-goers and the island's inhabitants. A considerable portion of Jamaica's population lives in poverty with historically consistent, high unemployment rates. Currency is the Jamaican dollar. Electricity is 110-volts, though only 50 cycles. Roads are pretty spotty throughout the island, even the "major" two-lane roads that circle the island.
Recently, there have been medium to large-scale riots between the gangs which control large portions of Kingston and government forces. Be aware of the current political, criminal and economic climate in Jamaica. Some even make an effort to reside inside the separated enclave owned by Royal Caribbean cruise line, which the cruise line privately secures and protects for their cruise passengers.
