Nicaragua

map of Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a sprawling Central American country of 50,000 square miles and more than 5.7 million population. We will be concerned with primarily the portion of eastern Nicaragua which touches the Caribbean Sea and some of the lakes and rivers to the East, which have seen considerably more investment activity in recent years. The currency is the Cordoba and - obviously - the sole and dominant language is Spanish with some limited English in a few areas such as Lake Nicaragua where more Americans have settled.

More expatriates seem to be finding their way to this sleepy little country, particularly near the Lake Nicaragua area. Presumably, much of the new-found demand is derived from the substantial price appreciation in its neighbor to the South: Costa Rica. Investment dollars (or Cordobas) will stretch two to ten times further in Nicaragua than in most developed tourist areas of Costa Rica (particularly, on the Pacific side). Building costs and day-to-day living costs are also lower.
